It’s all in the cube es

The SurgiCube provides a localized, optimally filtered, sterile surgical environment to carry out microsurgical procedures and minor surgeries. Supply sterile air where you need it: around the operating surface. That is what the SurgiCube does. The sterile air flow is blown directly on to the operating surface, using laminar down flow technique. The surgical team can move around freely without adversely affecting the sterile field. All possible sources of contamination are sidelined.

THE SURGICUBE BENEFITS…

An alternative to the operating room

It takes a lot of time and effort to prepare an operating room. Many hospitals and clinics often perform minor and relatively simple surgeries in a general operating room.

Fortunately, the SurgiCube allows us to change this now! This flexible operating unit offers a localized sterile environment and its own simple logistics. Preparation time for surgery in a SurgiCube is much less than in a conventional operating room, which has a beneficial impact on planning and efficiency. The SurgiCube is the perfect, alternative treatment environment for many microsurgical procedures.

Specifically for minor surgeries

The SurgiCube was originally designed and developed for ophthalmic surgery. Practice has shown that minor surgeries of other disciplines can also be performed in the SurgiCube.

Technical specifications

The SurgiCube is a modular system which can be assembled and placed easily. The SurgiCube is 2.4 meters high and available in various widths, which makes the SurgiCube suitable for any application.

The narrowest SurgiCube, the iVi, is 1.8 meters wide and has a sterile working area of 1 meter. The widest SurgiCube is 3.8 meters wide and has a sterile working area of 2.2 meters wide. This size SurgiCube offers room for an additional assistant which makes it also suitable for training purposes. Additional information about SurgiCube applications will be sent upon request.

STERILE LAMINAR DOWNFLOW

The SurgiCube is characterized by its compact construction, expelling a sterile air flow across the full width of the operating surface by using laminar down flow technique. In a conventional operating room the air is expelled from a plenum in the ceiling high above the operating surface. As a result, the air flow may pass various obstacles such as lamps, microscopes, staff, etc. The SurgiCube’s outlet, however, is situated directly above the operating surface and the instrument table(s). Field measurements have shown that the air quality around the operating surface using a SurgiCube is cleaner than in most conventional operating rooms.

When it comes to ‘clean air’, the SurgiCube offers various advantages:

  • The SurgiCube supplies an ongoing, effective laminar flow across the operating surface and the instrument table(s).
  • As the outlet is situated directly above the operating surface, the laminar flow is not disrupted by obstacles
  • As the flow does not pass obstacles such as the surgical microscope and the head-neck area of the operating surgeon, the air source does not pass potential contamination sources: the air goes ‘from clean to dirty’.
  • The patient him-/herself, the most important contamination source, finds him-/herself, in a microbiological sense, ‘outside’ the operating surface.
  • Field measurements have shown that the air flow across the operating surface in the SurgiCube is ultra clean and the number of Colony Forming Units per m3 falls well below the threshold level.

Microsurgical operations

The design of the SurgiCube and the localized, sterile air flow makes the SurgiCube extremely suitable for microsurgical procedures. The patient can be placed under the sterile air flow of the SurgiCube in various ways allowing for a ‘small surface surgery’ to be performed on various parts of the body. Applicable to for example: plastic surgery, ENT- surgery, eye surgery, and orthopedic procedures such as knee, ankle, and hand surgery.

Optimization use operating room

The SurgiCube allows for extension of the surgical capacity in a simple manner and at relatively low cost. By performing the microsurgical procedures in the SurgiCube, the general operating rooms can be deployed more effectively for other procedures.

Easy accessibility

A properly equipped space around the SurgiCube offers the surgeon, staff and patients good accessibility. Various flows should be taken into account:

Sterile and non-sterile staff;
Patients;
Sterile and non-sterile instruments.

A good arrangement of these flows ensures a rapid succession of surgeries, minimal chances of contamination, and high patient comfort.

Emergencies

The SurgiCube offers a rapid extension of the surgical capacity in case of disasters or external emergencies. The SurgiCube also offers an alternative arrangement for treatment in the case of internal malfunctions. With a small power aggregate the unit can be used rapidly as an (emergency) surgical facility.

Patient comfort

The SurgiCube keeps patients satisfied. Accessibility of the SurgiCube is particularly relevant to the patient in this regard. As well as the fact that they do not need to dress for surgery. The fact that they can sit down themselves on the treatment chair, do not need to dress for surgery, and the surgery is completed quickly creates a relaxing situation for the patient. This results in a high level of customer satisfaction.

Location independent

The SurgiCube has a modular design and is extremely durable. The unit can be placed in almost any domestically clean and draught-free room. Because of its modular construction, the SurgiCube can be placed within one day. The SurgiCube will be validated on the second day, after which the unit is operational. The number of possible applications is endless, including university hospitals, general hospitals, training centers, private clinics, and outpatient clinics.

Purchase or Lease

The SurgiCube can also be purchased on a leasehold basis, whereby the investment can be spread over a period of time. For more information please contact SurgiCube International.

Cost efficient

The SurgiCube leads to cost savings at several levels. First of all the purchase costs of the SurgiCube amount to a fraction of the costs involved with a conventional operating room. Additionally, costs are saved on construction, housing, maintenance, and energy costs. The afore-mentioned savings lead to significant reduction of costs per intervention, while periodically more interventions can be performed.
On balance: a win-win situation.

Simplified infrastructure

By using the SurgiCube, the infrastructure around the treatment space can be greatly simplified: medical staff can be used more efficiently because operating room logistics are not determinative, patients can be prepared beforehand and be monitored after the surgical intervention in the same treatment space without changing procedures. Pure time savings which obviously translate into reduced costs.

Useful for training purposes

The costs for training new assistant physicians can be greatly reduced by using the SurgiCube. The lower overhead costs of the SurgiCube result in significantly lower costs compared with a traditional operating room. The larger size SurgiCube (sterile working surface of 2.2 meters) offers sufficient space for one physician and two assistants.

Installation SurgiCube®

Installing the SurgiCube® can be done in a matter of hours. Once the SurgiCube® is available on-site, the trained technicians can set it up quite easily.

The SurgiCube® comes in prefab parts and can be assembled in your clinic in a suitable room. Once installed, it should be cleaned and switched on. After running correctly and setting the correct air velocity, a validation needs to be done.

For all information please contact your local contact person or SurgiCube® International directly.

Expert view on the SurgiCube

We have asked a lot of experts about their opinion on bringing the SurgiCube to the clinic.
First we are proud to show you the interview we had with Dr. Petr Masek from The University Hospital Ostrava.

The SurgiCube Kit is live!

As of April we can support our trusted distributors via the SurgiCube Kit on our website.

The SurgiCube Kit maintains all relevant information about the SurgiCube. This information is spread through various folders, brochures and online pages, some of which we use infrequently.

This way it is more easy to convince stakeholders in the hospitals and show them the unique selling points of the SurgiCube.
From now on, it only takes a minute to locate, login, and access all the SurgiCube information.

We are proud of this extra tool and believe it can be helpful for our distributors to promote the SurgiCube.

ESCRS congress september 2016

During this congress in September we promoted the SurgiCube as well as the Operio Mobile and other tools.

Operio has been cleared for the US market!

Toul Meditech AB is proud to announce that Operio has been cleared by the FDA according to 510(k) and the device can now be marketed in the US. Operio is a portable device for use in a surgical operating room that produces a directed, non-turbulent flow of air to the surgical site during ophthalmic surgery and to the sterile instruments used during surgery.
